Why people are embracing ‘airplane rules’ for everyday life: ‘Money doesn’t matter’ and ‘Drinking at all hours’

On a normal day, most people likely follow a typical routine: eat a nutritious breakfast, eat three meals a day, drink plenty of water, have a regular sleep schedule, etc.

But when “airport rules” come into play, anything goes.

People on TikTok are regularly following the so-called airport rules, eating pizza for breakfast, having a drink in the middle of the day and taking a midday nap.

Users have stated that “airport rules apply,” meaning that all routines and norms go out the window, just like when you’re at an airport waiting for your flight. When you’re traveling, tired and need to fill your free time, it makes sense to spend $7 on a bottle of water or eat a burger and fries at 9am.

“Money means nothing and the time of day means nothing,” one user explained. “If you want to drink mimosas while eating an entire cake by yourself at 1:30 p.m., do it.”

The trend of applying these rules to everyday life originally started in part as an election night joke as a way to cope and deal with stress.

In a viral video posted in Nov. 4, the day before election day, one user said: “Airport rules are in effect, okay? Money, time – they have nothing for us now. Fancy a drink at 9am? I won’t encourage it, but I won’t judge you for it, understand?”

However, even with the election behind us, the trend has continued to grow and people have decided that the airport rules are valid for the rest of the year – and for some, even beyond 2024.

“Comfortable clothes at any time. Clothes in public are understandable,” one person commented. “Drinking at all permitted hours. Coffee/energy drinks are also allowed at all hours. So if you had a donut and a beer for breakfast.”

“I’ve had a dirty martini and Doritos so far. Oh and joggers and twizzlers, and I’m about to go raid my nephew’s Halloween haul. I have prosecco for later,” someone shared.

“This is why I had ramen for dinner at 1am,” laughed another.

“I started with an Irish coffee and just had a canned margarita with lunch,” admitted one.

“The rules of the plane also include that money doesn’t matter. Buy everything you want/need to get through this time,” someone added, saying they “anxiety bought a pot with a built-in lid holder. and it’s pink.”
