A CEO’s weird Christmas party chat with staff has gone viral after he told workers he took drugs but didn’t do it at work events.
Stephen Carter, CEO of recruitment firm Sharp and Carter, gave the emotional speech on Zoom, with one of his 203 employees filming the meeting and posting it on social media.
“I do drugs myself, I just don’t do it at work events,” Carter says in the video.
“Because that’s when things really get out of hand. If you take drugs on Christmas Day you will be fired. It’s a really strong rule
“If you want to cheat on your partner, I would recommend that 2024 has been a strong reminder that it’s probably not wise to cheat on your partner with someone at work,” Carter continued.
“If you’re going to cheat on your partner and if you have to do it – just don’t do it with someone at work, it gets really problematic as we’ve seen.
“If you’re single, we have a lot of people who have met their partner here.”
When Carter was made aware of the footage and interviewed by the Herald Sun, he said he had been giving a version of the same speech for seven years.
Carter, whose head offices are in Melbourne, added that he probably would have chosen his words more carefully if he had known the conversation would end up on social media.
“Obviously I didn’t expect it to be felt from the outside,” he said.
“I probably would have chosen to use my words a little differently if I had known that.
“But in terms of content, I have not been exposed to the sexual harassment of dozens of employees, or caught in a compromising position or dead in a pit, the goal is obviously to take care of and take care of my people so that they can do not Do harm to yourself and others.
“The law does not see the Christmas holidays as different from the workplace and the same professional conduct applies.
“As 203 people, we are representatives of society, and in the society that happens, people take drugs, people cheat on their partner, and I’m just trying to make it through. I don’t want to clean up their mess afterwards. I’m trying to get ahead.
“It’s nothing specific to my business any more than any other business.”
Carter added that he had been drug free for “about five years”.
“I have no philosophical objection to drugs, but the workplace is not the place for them,” he said.
“It’s about friends in a social setting. Go and do drugs tomorrow for all I care, but don’t do it at the Christmas party or at work.
“I was going to say I did drugs. I don’t have a philosophical problem with drugs, just don’t do them at work, but then I thought everyone was going to tease me and say ‘when did you do drugs Carts in 1986?’, so I changed it to the present tense. But I haven’t taken drugs in about five years and it’s not like I’m doing drugs,” Carter added.
